About the tour
Included in the three day Kruger Lodge experience are two breakfasts and two dinners, as well as safari vehicle and minivan transport, open-top, four-wheel drive game drives, game walks, one night's accommodation in the Kruger Park, and a visit to the Three Rondawels view point of the Blyde river canyon.
Guests should budget $40 (US) for meals not included.
Accommodation
Accommodation for the duration of the safari is provided in the form of thatched roof, en-suite chalets and safari tents at Thornhill Safari Lodge.
Chalets consist of twin, double and family units, and special arrangements can be made to accommodate younger guests.
Important Info & Warnings
The group departs Johannesburg extremely early on the first day and arrives back late in the afternoon on day four, making it important to book into Johannesburg the day before the tour.
As dictated by Kruger National Park safety regulations, children under the age of sixteen are not permitted on the bush walks in this itinerary.
Wildlife
The Orpen to Satara area, as well as the neighboring Timbavati, is home to large herds of zebra, lion prides, wildebeest, cheetah, leopard, giraffe, impala, warthog and elephant.
Attractions
Activities offered on the tour include game drives in open 4 x 4 vehicles, ranging throughout Greater Kruger National Park and conducted by knowledgeable and enthusiastic park staff, as well as guided game walks on the private Kruger National Park game reserve. Transfers to, from, and around the safari camp are facilitated in an air-conditioned microbus, while game drives take place in open safari vehicles.
Attractions include the stop near the Drakensberg Escarpment to view the Three Rondawels and
Blyde River Canyon
, as well some of the park's rewarding bird watching.
Day 1
• Guests depart Johannesburg, travelling to a lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park, and arriving in time for lunch
• The late afternoon and evening is spent tracking
Big Five
game from the vantage of open 4 x 4 vehicles on a private game reserve
• One of the waterholes serves as a stop where guests are served sundowners and can relax in the waning light of the setting African sun
• From this evening drive, the party returns to camp, a log fire, and a traditional South African meal
Day 2
• After an early wake up call, guests are shown to a delicious breakfast at one of the picnic spots, before setting off through the park again
• This trip facilitates excellent game viewing and bird watching experiences, as well as stopping off at numerous waterholes along the way. The safari makes use of some of Kruger National Park's most popular and rewarding game viewing trails
• The evening, once again, is geared toward relaxation and ambiance, with well cooked, traditional food being eaten around a crackling fire
Day 3
• Another fresh-and-early start sees guests venture out on a morning bush walk where they learn how to track wild animals
• After breakfast the group departs for Johannesburg, stopping once in Mpumalanga Province, approaching the Drakensberg Escarpment, to take in the view of the Three Rondawels which overlook the
Blyde River Canyon
