The Free State's gorgeous Maluti Mountain range snakes through the heart of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Here, ensconced by the park's cliffs of sandstone and chrystalline rivers, lies the Brandwag Hotel, a thirty-four roomed remnant of the park's elegant history.

Built in 1965 and renovated in 1997, the hotel caters for a wide range of tastes, providing indoor and outdoor entertainment, hiking, game trails, lookout points, and a restaurant, bar, coffee shop and curio shop, for guests not wishing to stray too far from their base. Conference facilities at the hotel accommodate up to 150 guests.

Golden Gate National Park was awesome. The staff there are really proud of their park and do their best to make you feel accommodated and at home. It is situated in a magnificent area, and is just a short drive from the very cultural small town of Clarens which makes for great day-time excursions. The Brandwag chalets were comfortable and came complete with DSTV and a fully equipped kitchen. Simple units done in the traditional old Afrikaans-style in the 80s I would imagine. The views of the mountain over the road were stunning.
