A lovely break from the city

"Thank you very much for the lovely accommodation. It was really nice to break away from the city to a picturesque setting. Even though the decor is quite old and one of the couches in the cottage was slightly broken, it was really good value for money. The accommodation is equiped with everything you need and is very neat and clean.

We had a lovely stay with lots to do, as we could go hiking and swimming!

Thanks again
Nienke"

Experience- Glen Reenen vs Basotho Cultural Rest Camp

"We overnight Jan 2012 first at the Basotho Cultural Village Restcamp - it was n wonderful experience, the accommodation was something special and well equipped en well maintained - the guided tour to the museum is a must.
The second night we stayed at Glen Reenen that was more expensive than the Cultural Camp and it was like "chalk and cheese" - the standard was not the same - The braai need to be replaced as the coals just fall through the holes (and can be a fire problem in a strong wind), the shower spray more water in the roof than down, missing cutlery and crockery, dead globes and no coffee/tea.
On a positive note it was n pleasure to be helped at Reception by friendly and very helpful ladies in Afrikaans."

Suggestions

"Nice park but some things need attention.maybe gate control to actual camp site..showers in ablution blocks needs curtains or something to keep spilling water all over the place...more regular cleaning of ablution blocks will be appreciated."

Noise of cars and lorries

"The passing traffic is terrible.
Passing through traffic should be stopped immediately."

Fabulous weekend

"We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights at Glen Reened. I would recommend it for anyone. The only criticism is that they don't wash dishes."

Golden Gate

"Rondavel, shop and trails were fine. Not sufficient circular drives to get closer to view game. (When compared with Addo Elephant Park)"

Camping at the Golden Gate

"Yes to break away from JHB is always a pleasure. The kids and some friends asked what do you do there? I said nothing is also fine with me. I went to relax. The trip went well except for the few potholes before Bethlehem. We towed an off-road trailer with a tent on top. The car lacked some power with the uphill sections but managed. We stopped at Clarens and we could see why it is so popular. We looked at a few art exhibitions and the stalls where the locals were displaying their art. We then went to Golden gate to set up camp. Some of the best spots next to the river was occupied. We chose a spot and assembled the tent. After an hour we were admiring the mountain changing colours as the sun set in the West. When the sun went down behind the mountain it became extremely cold. Luckily we went prepared. Warm clothes, sleeping bag and duvet. A warm hat would have helped. The people in the caravans probably had it a bit more comfortable. The next day we went for a walk up to the echo point. Amazing. Later we went for a drive pass the Langtoon dam. Along the route we saw 2 Buffalo. Where were the rest we all asked. In the Kruger you see many of them. We then went to the Golden gate hotel. A bit on the quiet side but very nice. Later we went to the camp to start a fire and to braai something. 4 bikers arrived in the dark and starting putting up their small tents. They made a fire for heat and to braai something. The next morning I spoke to one guy and he said they drove down from JHB to Golden Gate all along the dirt roads and headed back the next day. Like the Wild hogs. Many guys would like to do it. We saw however many bikers that weekend who are probably in the high income bracket, looking at their machinery. We came back and said we will go again but after the rainy season when the mountains are green. The only negative we have was the traffic and speed bumps passing the camp site, especially at night. The ablution blocks were very clean. Thanks

Stay at Glen Reenen Rest Camp

"I think the price is overrated for what we've been offer at the campsite. There nothing to do for the kids. And you must include your conservation fees into the price as it is also too much for adults / children. It was really boring and your cafe prices are overrated. We must ride to Bethlehem to get our stuff and food. Sorry but I expected more for the price."

Glen Reneen

"Campsite very clean.

Washrooms and kitchen very clean and everything working.

All staff, reception, shop, campsite very friendly, polite and helpful.

Only problem was the big trucks going through in the middle of the night.

Had dinner at the hotel one night, the quality of the food was excellent, and the staff there were also very well trained and professional.

Looking forward to returning in the future."

Cold floors and conservation charges.

"Carpets or floor mats will warm the place especially in winter. Bathroom very cold, maybe a wall heater or two. Not fair to charge sleep over clients conservation fee if they do not use the viewing facilities."

Golden Gate

"Went for the hiking, did not visit the game reserve. Hiking was nice, short routes to accommodate most people. Long walks available.
Rondavel: Average, can be better if space is supplied for groceries. Suggestion - Something against the wall above stove. Electric blankets a winner in winter. Will go again, thanks!"

Worst ever

"The unit was small, dirty and unkempt. I was horrified and the idea to pack up and leave was an option. This is not something you can offer South African residents never mind show this to international tourists."

Very unhappy

"I found the accommodation to be below standard, dirty and was generally very disappointed. It was far overpriced and shocking to say the least."

Below par compared to Karoo, Mountain Zebra, Addo, Tsitsikamma SANParks

"We had high expectations after visiting the Eastern Cape SANParks last year, but were disappointed with electricity problem in rondavel (loft light not working) and TV remote control also not functional. Trust you will address this to bring up to your usually high standards. Thank you."
