Rising from the undulating plains of charming countryside that reach up into the foothills of Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains, the sandstone cliffs of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park turn brilliant shades of gold when bathed in early morning light and spectacular late afternoon sunsets.
These 11 600 hectares of preserved land which forms part of
South African National Parks
, host a variety of highland mammals and an extraordinary bird population, the rare Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier) and Cape Vulture among them. Along the ridges, koppies and plains, guests can spot wildlife grazing. Kudu, red hartebeest, white rhinoceros and buffalo, are regular visitors to the surrounds, and the eland and oribi are often seen roaming the plain, beneath the vigil of the striking Brandwag Rock. The history of the Golden Gate park is as rich as the gold deposits in its soil. Not only is the area home to a wealth of ancient San rock art but it is also home to the oldest dinosaur embryo ever discovered.
