Karoo National Park - Most popular Camps
In the heart of the Western Cape's semi-desert Karoo region, on the central high-plateau of South Africa, the Karoo National Park sprawls, surrounded by the mountains of the escarpment. This harsh landscape, where temperatures sometimes soar over 35 degrees Celsius, was once inhabited by the hunter-gatherer San and Khoi people, and still bears the archaeological traces of a rich history of human habitation. Prehistorically an inland sea, the area is famous amongst palaeontologists for being the site where numerous important fossils were discovered. Known by the Khoi people as the "land of great thirst", the Karoo is now an area of flourishing agriculture, conservation and tourism.
The Great Karoo area is the largest ecosystem in South Africa and the park itself is dwarfed by the expansive surrounds of the Nuweveld Mountains and plains. With as little as 400mm of rain annually, the grasslands are a vast expanse of arid and semi-arid plains. Even in this harsh climate, the park is home to a spectacular array of fauna and flora. The unique biodiversity of the Karoo Park means that it has one of the richest expanses of desert flora in the world, with over 9000 species of plants being found here.
SANParks’
Karoo Park is also home to a diverse group of animals such as mongoose, hare, five species of tortoise and numerous species of birds. Two of South Africa’s most highly endangered species, the riverine rabbit and the black rhinoceros, have been successfully resettled here. The park is perhaps most famous for the Quagga Project - an attempt by a group of South African scientists to bring back the Quagga from extinction and reintroduce it into reserves in its former habitat. The formerly extinct animal is again roaming free in the park.
Set in a landscape of contrasts, between imposing mountains and stretching plains, this is an area of rich historical and ecological history and diversity. Being a wonderful place to see some of the rarest animals in Southern Africa, or witness the incredible rose-hued desert sunsets, the Karoo National Park is one of the most unique destinations in the world.
