Letaba Restcamp
(
219 reviews
)
Letaba Restcamp falls under the shady gaze of the tall Sycamore Fig, Natal Mahogany, Apple Leaf, and Sausage Trees that surround the banks of the sweeping Letaba River. It owes much of its character to the arresting setting of the riverine oasis in which it is set. Situated centrally, at the junction of the three main roads of the
Kruger Park
, the camp is a prime location from which to explore the park.
Aloe and Impala Lilly attract a range of indigenous birds and fleck the campgrounds with colour. The abundance of greenery at the camp means it does anything but live up to the meaning of its name - the "river of sand".
Elephant thrive in the Letaba Camp area and can regularly be seen ambling through the riverbed from the deck of the Nambu Restaurant. Rare animal species such as eland, Sharpe’s Grysbok and roan may be also seen, and common predator sightings include cheetah. Some guests have also been lucky enough to see a pride of lions or a cheetah making a kill in the flat expanse of the open riverbed.
Activities include guided riverside walks and exciting night-game drives, or a tour of the nearby Masorini Ruins, a late Iron Age site of the smelting furnaces, forges and crumbling ruins of the Sotho speaking BaPhalaborwa tribe. A visit to Letaba Camp’s Elephant Hall is a must.
The museum houses the enormous tusks of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ – the seven greatest elephants ever to roam the Kruger National Park. A number of bird and animal hides, particularly the Matambeni hide on the northern bank of the Engelhardt dam, offer excellent vantage points for birding. The spectacular landscape is a treasure trove of sights, smells and textures to delight the senses of any keen traveler.
Accommodation ranges from luxurious, air-conditioned guesthouses and bungalows to spacious and well-facilitated cottages. There are also huts and tented camps where guests can retire after a delicious bush braai and relax to the sounds of owls, cicadas, nightjars and crickets. The bushveld oasis of Letaba Restcamp provides an ideal setting for a restful and memorable getaway.

Our first stay in Letaba was excellent! Staff friendly and campsite need and tidy, will definitely stay in Letaba again in the future! Just a bit disappointed with the food at the restaurant, not up to standard and waited quite long time to get the food. Also has a RSA resident, I don’t mind buying something nice to take home to remember my trip in Kruger, but the shop is very very expensive! Not everybody that comes to Kruger are tourist, keep that in mind! Night drive was good and the tour guide was very nice. Thank you KNP and Letaba for a memorable trip!

Once again, good camp. Only problem, we booked night safari for 7.30 but so had 36 others and the truck only seated 21? Had to wait till 8.45 but by then it was pouring down. I would still heartily recommend you staying IN the park when visiting Kruger rather than day trips. SAN parks are brilliant when it comes to advice and sorted out our itinerary etc.

What a beautiful camp. Unfortunately our time around Letaba was not very exciting when it came to viewing game. The rooms were the best by far - very spacious and very well equipped.

I experienced a very enjoyable holiday at Letaba. The team that did the reservation is very professional and on the ball. The camp is lovely and I will recommend it to anyone. However, the Letaba resident game rangers were terrible! There names are Oscar and Cecilia. The two of them have got a terrible attitude, like they are doing the guests a favour by taking us on a game drive as they would rather be doing something else. No information came from them regarding nature, game, etc. For example, we drove past a herd of Zebras, Oscars comment was Zebra, that was it, he did not even stop for us to look at them. I also got the impression that they do not have information to give to the guests. I overheard other guest speaking amongst each other complaining about the same thing, their comment was "the game ranger does not know anything but expects a fat tip!" I have had bush experiences in the past and the game rangers were very pleasant and forthcoming and of course well informed. I recommend for Oscar and Cecilia to be replaced by game rangers that is qualified, have a passion for nature and animals and want to be a game ranger and above all like people.

It was a great 3 days in the park. On one day below Satara on the S100 we saw 2 leopards and a cheetah. The cheetah was trying to run down a kudu. The accommodations were very nice - especially at Letaba. The food at Mopani was excellent. As usual the staff was courteous and helpful throughout the park.
