The surrounding area facilitates the viewing of zebra and wildebeest, giraffe, impala, warthog and elephant. Northwards, the Timbavati river and Olifants camp afford viewing of lion, cheetah and leopard.
Immediately east of
Orpen Camp are plains which are considered extremely reliable for spotting the nomadic Senegal (Lesser Black-winged) Plover (Search at the turn off to
Tamboti and
Maroela Camps), and Montagu's Harrier been sighted intermittently in the past.
White-faced and Comb (Knob-billed) Ducks, Little Grebe (Dabchick) and Lesser Moorhen breed in the Rabelais Pan area. Surrounding areas play host to a vast variety of birds and bird types.
Tall acacias and marula trees occupy the camp grounds alongside red bush willows. Small rock gardens accommodate aloe, while the huts are separated by Barberton daisies.
