Mountain Zebra National Park - Most popular Camps
In 1937, Mountain Zebra National Park was established by
SANParks
for the protection of the near extinct Mountain Zebra. The 6 536 hectare park is now home to a host of indigenous creatures and unique Karoo vegetation. Situated in the heart of the Eastern Cape, the park encompasses all the incredible scenic diversity of the area and is rich in diverse ecosystems, from its rocky summits down to the fynbos-covered veld below.
Set among the deep valleys and jagged terrain of the Bankberg Mountain Range, the park has superb views over the dramatic landscapes of the Karoo from the plateau. The mountain wilderness of Mountain Zebra Park is a haven to some of the most characteristic species of the African bush. Antelope like Kudu, Springbok, Eland, Blesbok, Steenbok, Red Hartebeest, Grey Rhebok, Mountain Reedbuck, Klipspringer and Duiker all graze freely along the slopes, stalked by the caracal and cheetah. Some rare and seldom-seen animals roam here too, including the shy Aardwolf, as well as the Cape Fox and Bat-eared Fox. With unique geometrical stripes, the small and beautiful zebras here have gone from being near-extinct to a thriving population, and can be easily spotted grazing on the open grasslands.
The rich variety of unique succulent vegetation, like koggelmandervoetkaroo and witmuistepelkaroo, aloes, wild olives, white stinkwood and fragrant camphor grow high up in the ravines of Mountain Zebra Park. Hidden amongst the dense scrub are the fascinating long-horn beetles and other small creatures that are part of the ecosystem’s intricate tapestry. Visitors can spot these and many other animals, and learn more about the natural environment on guided walks and game trails. Hiking takes guests up into rocky outcrops where there are San rock paintings to be discovered.
See the striking beauty of the boldly striped Mountain Zebra, famously saved from extinction by the park, now thriving in this idyllic reserve. One of the most unique and exceptional areas of conservation in South Africa, Mountain Zebra National Park offers a great opportunity to take in the incredible scenery of the Eastern Cape - with all its contrast and beauty.
