Richtersveld Transfrontier Park National Park - Most popular Camps
The Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park is a massive 6 045 square kilometre span of desert and mountain scenery. Incorporating part of the !Ai-!Ais Hotspring Game Park in Namibia, it boasts the spectacular Fish River Canyon - the world's second largest canyon - with rocks older than 2 600 million years. The park encompasses two major climatic regions, the warm Succulent Karoo and Nama-Karoo biomes, each with varying rainfall. Summer temperatures can rise to a scorching 52°C, lending this particular
South African National Park
the name !Ai-!Ais, meaning ‘very hot’.
Richtersveld Park is bisected by the Orange River, which is surrounded by the extraordinary riparian bush. With 560 endemic species, the park also preserves around 2 700 species of plants. Endemic species can be found up in the mountainous regions where soft rainfall is regular. Some of the best known species seen here, the ‘half-mens’ succulents, include quiver trees and giant tree aloes. Five major areas of vegetation to be found here are Mopane woodlands and shrubveld, mixed bushveld, sandveld, riverine woodlands and seasonally flooded and dry grasslands. The succulent Karoo is well known for its phenomenal display of flowers after winter rains, covering the normally arid desert floor in a kaleidoscopic blanket of flowers.
The incredible ecological diversity at Richtersveld Park lends itself to an amazing variety of habitats, as 147 mammals, 500 or more species of birds, 49 species of fish and 116 reptile species are found here. Predators include black-backed jackal, brown hyena, caracal and leopard. The petite klipspringer is common while other ungulates found here are kudu, duiker, steenbok, grey rhebok, gemsbok and the distinct Hartmann's mountain zebra.
A site of fascinating geological history that goes back around two billion years, the park was the home of the nomadic-pastoral Nama people. It is the site of a number of significant archaeological finds and offers evidence of human habitation of the area which dates back to 2 200 BC. An area of enormous cultural significance and incredible ecological diversity, preserving the fragile natural balance of the Richtersveld and surrounds, Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park is one of the most important areas of natural wealth in southern Africa and the world.
