Native to the
Shingwedzi area are impala, kudu, duiker, bushbuck, nyala and Sharpe’s grysbok, as well as buffalo and waterbuck. Prominently featured are the park's elephant, baboon and vervet monkey, as well as predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and wild dog packs.
Transvaal mustard trees and weeping boer-bean are prominent in the area, and native sausage trees, Natal mahogany, and brack thorn are also to be found. Mopani shrub and apple leaf can be found further away from the river.
The camp hosts a variety of bird types, and yields a wide ranging bird-watcher's experience, with hornbills, starlings, weavers and Mourning Doves, Bennett’s Woodpecker, Natal Robin, European Hobby (hawking prey at dusk in summer), Grey Penduline Tit, Dusky and Village Indigobird (Black and Steelblue Widowfinch) and AfricanScops-Owl (at night), Verreaux’s (Giant) Eagle Owl, Bathawk, and the popular Collared Palm Thrush all being found at various points around the camp.
Storks (Open-billed, Yellow-billed, Saddle-billed and Wooly-necked), Black Crake and African Jacana, White-winged Tern, the rare Dwarf Bittern and the common Green-backed Heron can be viewed upwards from the river and in the camp's bird hide.
