Blesbok

South Africa is home to some of the finest natural spectacles seen anywhere in the world. With its breathtaking scenery and numerous wildlife conservation reserves, the Republic boasts a truly African experience for all travelers embarking on a journey through her country. The famous Kruger National Park is one of South Africa’s most well-known tourist attractions and boasts a stunning terrain that is home to a wide variety of various animals. Visitors to the Kruger Park can look forward to an exhilarating and educational adventure with the help of a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of guides and experts. The Blesbok is one of the proud members of the Antelope family that guests will be able to view during their Kruger Park sojourn. The Blesbok – also known as the Blesbuck – can be distinguished by a prominent white blaze on its face and a horizontal brown strip, which divides the blaze above the animal’s eyes. The rest of its physical features consist of a brown fur coat and lighter coloured saddle on its back, with its rump an even lighter shade than the saddle. The male Blesbok can weigh up to as much as 85kg while both ewes and rams have a pair of ringed horns; the female’s horns are more slender than her male counterpart’s. Visitors to the Kruger Park are likely to find the Blesbok in open grasslands near water as they are considered to be grazers, while they also have a preference for feeding on newly grown grass after veld fires. These antelope are active during the day, but will seek shelter if it gets too hot for them, meaning visitors will be able to view them during a safari walk or game drive. An interesting fact about the Blesbok is that unlike other antelopes, they are not very adept jumpers – in fact a 135cm fence is enough to enclose them with.
