Caracal
The country of South Africa has unparalleled beauty and has become the destination of choice for those seeking a holiday that takes them back to Mother Nature. With an abundance of game reserves and excellent hospitality, South Africa promises visitors the African experience of a lifetime.
One of the country’s top tourist destinations is the magnificent and world-famous Kruger National Park. Boasting a wide collection of animal species and being fiercely committed to the conservation of these creatures, guests to the Kruger Park can look forward to an exhilarating as well as educational expedition. The Park is home to many species of the intriguing Cat family, and one of the more elusive members is the Caracal.
At first sight, the Caracal could be mistaken for a lynx as they share a distinctively similar pair of large, pointed ears that have dark tufts of hair on top of them. However, the Caracal is not the same as the true species of the Lynx; the Caracal by comparison has a slimmer and less stocky body, and its legs are thinner and tail is longer than that of the lynx.
This Cat prefers woodland areas and savannah scrublands as a habitat as well as rugged mountainous terrains. Visitors to the Kruger Park hoping for a closer look at the Caracal will likely find them at night as they are largely nocturnal creatures. Diurnal activity has been observed, but the Caracal uses the night time in particular to hunt and feed. The Caracal is a fairly private creature and solitary; because they are perceived as agricultural pests by farmers, they have become even more elusive, meaning that they are difficult to sight. It is therefore a tremendous privilege for those visiting the Kruger Park to spot one of these graceful cats and a definite highlight during your safari sojourn.
