Hadeda (Ibis)

Instantly recognisable, this bird is, by way of its appearance, sound and overall character, one of the hallmarks of a South African safari. A member of the Ibis family of birds, this long legged spectacle is known for its distinctive call, let out during its early morning flights, or when it is startled out in the bush. Measuring up to 76 cm long, this bird has a specially adapted, curved beak, perfect for digging it earthworm diet out of the warm mud of the rivers it frequents.

Found far and wide across sub-Saharan Africa, this bird is loved and recognised by many, a plentiful figure in the skies, and an instant reminder of relaxing mornings spent out in the bush.
