Mountain Reedbuck
When looking to spend a holiday appreciating the finest Mother Nature has to offer and to enjoy a fun-filled yet educational adventure marveling at a kaleidoscope of animals, the country of South Africa is a popular destination amongst many travellers. With its supreme selection of wildlife parks and nature reserves, the game viewing experience is a truly magical encounter for those visiting this beautiful country. One of the top draw card destinations in South Africa is undoubtedly the legendary Kruger National Park. Offering a diverse array of animals and surrounded by breathtaking bush and veld views, the Kruger Park promises to be the highlight of your trip. The park is home to a wide collection of Antelope with visitors able to view the Mountain Reedbuck, among others, during their safari sojourn. The Mountain Reedbuck is a shy and graceful specie, with a preferred habitat in mountainous terrains and rocky slopes. Their fur is predominantly grey, with contrasting underbellies that are a stark white in colour, and their heads and shoulders are a reddish-brown hue. These animals are primarily grazers and because their diet consists mainly of low quality coarse grasses, they need to have constant access to a fresh water supply. Visitors to the Kruger Park will likely see these gregarious antelope sunning themselves on mountain slopes usually in a herd of nearly a dozen members. As the Mountain Reedbuck is a nervous and timid animal, when it lies down to rest it will do so in the company of a few other bucks, and if they face impending danger, one member will let out a shrill alarm yelp to notify the rest of the herd, who then will head for safety. Visitors are also alerted to watch the Mountain Reedbuck when the weather is bad; the buck usually either faces his hindquarters towards heavy winds and rains, or alternatively will reside on a sheltered slope till the bad elements pass.
