Overview

The pervasive Mopani tree found in the Pioneer Dam area of Kruger National Park lends both its aesthetic and its name to this primary rest camp. Thatched buildings with rock faced walls blend seamlessly into the natural environment, materials used to construct these buildings including rough stone, wood and thatching-grass.

Huddled against and overlooking the banks of the dam, visitors can take advantage of the winter trend for park animals to move towards water sources as they migrate towards the dam's edge, providing excellent viewing opportunities.

The Tropic of Capricorn loop and the Nshawu pans areas allow for game viewing from open plains which host blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, buffalo and the rarer tsessebe, as well as the smaller Black-Backed Jackal and caracal.

Bird watching is centred on the Pioneer Dam, where storks, egrets, kingfishers and African Fish Eagles are to be seen, with occasional appearances from white Collared (Red-winged) Pratincole, African Spoonbill, Black-winged Stilt and White-winged Tern.

The granite soil in the area hosts mixed bush willow, silver cluster-leaf and tree and shrub mopane, while gneiss soil combines apple-leaf with shrub mopane. Large knob-thorn, tamboti and leadwood are found along the drainage lines.

The trip was well spent and accommodation was nice, we didn't feel the heat of Mopani, We enjoyed it.

Ezra Khosa

Louise Kingston

It was 41.5 degrees when we arrived, and climbed to 43 degrees at 7pm. The camp is well set out, with a spectacular view of the water from the bar deck. The heat obviously affected all the game, but we saw elephant and buffalo.

Billy Cochrane
